Preparation for the MAT210 Week 9 Assignment

# Weeks 6, 8 and 9 Assignment Preparation & Big Picture (150 points)

## Conference Application: Data-Driven Decisions Making

The work for this assignment is broken up and completed in three steps: week 6 discussion, week 8 discussion, and the final assignment in week 9. The work you complete on those discussions will be incorporated into the week 9 assignment. By the time you reach week 9, you will just incorporate provided feedback, add a little more detail, and put the finishing touches on before you submit it.

### Part A: Week 6 Discussion

The work for this discussion completes part 1 and 2 of the conference application in Week 9.

### Title of Article (include name of publication, author/researchers, and publishing date):

1. (22.5 pts): Provide a clear and concise summary of the article you have chosen from week 6 by identifying the purpose and what real-world problem it is addressing/trying to solve. Include the following information: (Bulleted format, as shown below, is acceptable).

Topic – what is the purpose of the article?

What real world problem is the article trying to solve?

Who is the audience for the article?

Why was article the written?

2. (30 pts) Explain which category(s) of descriptive statistics (measures of frequency, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion/variation, or measures of position) is used in the study and how it is used to communicate the information found in the study. What are examples of the descriptive statistics data? What type of descriptive statistics are they considered? Why do you feel the author used this type of descriptive statistic was used to tell this story or to paint this picture? State conclusions and provide any solutions found in the study. How do you feel using the data the descriptive statistics can help lead to the solution? Make sure to clearly connect your explanation to the purpose/real world problem the article is addressing. (Length 1–2 paragraphs).

#### This will be submitted as a PowerPoint presentation. This is a continuation of the week 6 discussion and should include the same article. Part B of the week 9 assignment should come directly from the work you completed during the week 8 discussion. Please make sure to address all questions below and to include adjustments made based on the feedback you received during the week 8 discussion in the discussion thread and in the grading feedback area.

(22.5 pts) An additional part of the application process requires you to create a PowerPoint presentation based on the information provided above. To do so, choose an audience (outside of the field of mathematics) that could benefit from the information you will present:

3. One of the slides on the PowerPoint for the week 9 assignment should include a graph or chart that best represents the descriptive statistics from week 6 discussion that helps communicate a story or solution to the audience (1 PowerPoint slide from week 8 discussion). Make sure that your visualization includes appropriate titles, labels, size, colors, and text. Note: If the article already contains a visual, you must create a different type of graph or chart.

4. Another slide of your PowerPoint presentation should include an explanation of how the audience can benefit from the data (takeaways). (1 PowerPoint slide from week 8 discussion).

New Task: Explain why you chose the audience you identified above. This should be 2-3 sentences in length and should be included in the notes area of PowerPoint slide.

(22.5 pts) Recommend your identified solutions using language appropriate for the audience (1 PowerPoint slide from week 8 discussion-should include 3-5 bullets). How can the data help to find the solution?

Week 9 Assignment: Conference Application

In week 6 you completed the first two bulleted items in Part A and in week 8 you completed Part B (PowerPoint). All that is left is to complete are the last two bullet points in part A (conference application) in week 9 before you submit.

5. (22.5 pts) Week 9 Task: Explain how the article applies to the real world, your major, your current job, or your future career goal. Describe several connections, using specific examples, between the information presented, its problem and its larger impact to the world/your major/current job/future career goal (1-2 paragraphs).

6. (30 pts) Week 9 Task: What solutions do you recommend based on analysis of data and conclusions drawn? Recommend several highly relevant and valid solutions based on the analysis of data and conclusions drawn using mathematical and visual data provided in the article. (1-2 paragraphs; See weeks 7 and 8 Learn in Blackboard).
